Understanding Emotional Barriers in the Spiritual Realm
The spiritual realm, often unnoticed yet undeniably real, is an intrinsic aspect of our lived experiences. It’s crucial to understand how the Spirit realm interacts with the physical world around us. Everything that unfolds in the physical has a spiritual foundation.
To grasp this concept in its entirety, you must understand that you are not just a physical body; you also have a spiritual form. The Lord began to teach me about the spiritual realm many years ago, and I want to use this post to help you understand how our actions in the physical are represented in the spirit.
A Personal Experience with Emotional Barriers
I recall an experience where I perceived myself in the spiritual realm, positioned between two giant walls, one in front of me and the other behind. What struck me as unusual was the deep sense of safety emanating from these walls. This was a stark departure from how I would have felt if confined within a similar space in the physical realm.
I felt at peace; I did not panic or feel overwhelmed. As I stared up at the wall in front of me, the Holy Spirit began to teach me some vital lessons. The walls were comfortable because I had constructed them myself. Over the years, I had experienced so much pain and trauma that I found it necessary to retreat to a place that felt safe.
Identifying and Dismantling Emotional Walls
As I looked up at my wall, it was so huge, and my next thought was, how do I remove this? Again, I was learning. The Holy Spirit taught me that these walls were not just physical structures; they were emotional barriers that could only be dismantled by dealing with every brick of pain, anger, and negative emotions that led me to construct them in the first place.
It was a profound moment that changed the way I processed my emotions. The common narrative of someone being described as “hard to reach” often stems from encountering a figurative wall, a guarded demeanour that others can sense but may not fully understand. You may have said or heard these words yourself without realising the weight behind them.
While these walls aren’t something we can physically see, they are very real in the spiritual realm. What we observe on the outside, emotional distance, difficulty connecting, or avoidance is often just the physical manifestation of deeper emotional barriers already built in the spirit. Over time, these barriers become so solid and tall that they’re nearly impossible to break on our own.
Recognising and Addressing Emotional Walls
Think about it: how many times have you retreated into yourself during emotional pain or witnessed someone else do the same? It may feel like you’re protecting yourself, but what’s really happening is you’re constructing these walls without knowledge. These walls are meant to keep pain out, but eventually, they also trap us in.
It’s important to recognise the spiritual reality of these defence mechanisms. They might start off small, but if left unchecked, they grow into towering walls that confine us. Picture yourself trying to navigate between two skyscrapers with barely enough space to move, it would be overwhelming and paralysing. That’s what it’s like when emotional barriers go unaddressed; the walls grow taller.
The Path to Emotional and Spiritual Healing
To truly move forward, we must acknowledge that these walls exist not just in the physical world but also in the spiritual realm, where they are firmly rooted. This understanding is essential because until we identify and deal with these spiritual barriers, they will continue to hinder our personal growth and spiritual development. Recognising them is the first step toward healing.
A Prayer for Emotional Healing
Heavenly Father,
I come to You with an open heart, asking for healing from the emotional barriers that weigh me down. Break down walls of fear, pain, and unforgiveness, and replace them with Your peace and love. Wash over me with Your healing presence, restoring joy, trust, and wholeness in my spirit.
I surrender my wounds to You, Lord, believing that You are working in me. Fill me with Your strength and renew my heart to love and walk in freedom.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
