Do you often find yourself at odds with the world’s standards and expectations? If so, take heart, for you may be God’s perfect fit. Let me share a personal experience with you.

I think I was about 13 when I realised, I wasn’t very good at fitting into the norm. I was a calm child, I liked my space, not very experienced about anything, slightly naive about the world but still I wasn’t too curious to learn. I love the bigger things, the expansive sky, the ocean, and what was beyond all of it, those were the things that fascinated me. I was attracted to wisdom, so I loved hearing older people speak. I think I spent so much time in my own little world, that it was difficult to cement myself into the norm, it became me and that was comfortable.

Other people made friends easily, there was like a gravitational pole that pulled the rest of the world in one direction and then there was me sitting on the opposite end of that pole trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. So, by age 17, I did what was fitting for a misfit, I learnt to exist outside the box. I embraced my awkwardness; it was a niche crafted by the Heavenly Father himself. With time I disciplined myself to strive in that space, un-interrupted. Not burdened by conventional perspectives of what works in this world.

Years later I can happily confirm I have not changed. I live my conviction; it means I can show up to an event with my bible and a cross and remain in good conscience about my decision.

So, what’s the lesson here? We all have unique qualities and characteristics that sometimes make us feel like misfits in the world’s eyes. But we must learn to be comfortable in our separation from this world. Sometimes, not fitting in is a sign that God is pulling us out for a special purpose. You’ve got to see the beauty in the story rather than the tragedy.

It is where your transformation begins, where the mind becomes renewed.

Separation is your preparation for the good work God wants to perform through you, many are called but few are chosen, our response is always going to be important. So don’t be too quick to be inside a box where everything looks the same. Remember the words of Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God”.
